Dubai Schools to End at 11:30 AM on Fridays Starting January 9, 2026

Dubai private and government schools will dismiss students by 11:30 AM on Fridays from Jan 9, 2026, to align with updated Friday prayer timings. Learn how this affects families and the optional online learning for older students.

Dubai Adjusts School Friday Dismissal Times to Align with New Prayer Schedule

Starting Friday, January 9, 2026, all private and government schools in Dubai will end classes by 11:30 AM on Fridays, a change announced by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). This adjustment aligns the school week with the UAE's updated national Friday prayer timings, providing students and staff time to prepare for congregational worship.

What's Changing

  • Dismissal Time: All private schools and early childhood centers must ensure lessons conclude no later than 11:30 AM every Friday.
  • Week Structure: Monday to Thursday schedules remain unchanged.
  • Reason for Change: The General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat set the new Friday sermon and prayer time to begin at 12:45 PM starting January 2, 2026. The earlier dismissal allows adequate travel and preparation time.

Impact on Families and Schools

Schools have begun notifying parents about the updated schedule, which may require adjustments to drop-off/pick-up routines, childcare, and work arrangements. While the change is modest, it aims to better integrate educational commitments with religious and cultural practices.

Flexibility for Older Students

The KHDA has indicated that schools may apply to offer online learning on Fridays for students in Grade 6 (Year 7) and above, subject to parental consultation and regulatory approval. This blended approach provides flexibility while maintaining academic requirements.

Government School Adjustments

Under Ministry of Education directives, government schools are also implementing adjusted Friday schedules with specific dismissal times for different age groups, ensuring all students can observe religious practices without compromising weekly instructional time.

Parent and Community Response

The change has been welcomed by many as a thoughtful balance between academic and societal values. However, some families have raised logistical concerns, particularly regarding traffic and childcare between dismissal and prayer time.

Important Notes

  • Friday remains a full academic day with mandatory attendance.
  • The early release is not a reduction in overall school time but a recalibration respecting societal rhythms.

As the January 9 implementation approaches, schools will finalize timetables and communicate detailed plans to parents, marking one of the first significant policy changes of 2026 and reflecting the UAE's commitment to harmonizing education with national life.
