Dubai RTA Rules: How to Take Your E-Scooter on the Metro & Bus

Planning to take your e-scooter on Dubai Metro or bus? Follow the RTA's 8 key rules on size, storage, and safety to ensure a smooth commute.

Dubai RTA Clarifies Rules for Taking E-Scooters on Public Transport

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has issued a clear reminder to commuters on the regulations for bringing electric scooters onto public transport, including the Dubai Metro and buses. As e-scooters become a popular first-and-last-mile solution, following these rules is essential for safety and a smooth journey for all passengers.

8 Key Rules for E-Scooters on Public Transport

To ensure safety and convenience, the RTA has established specific guidelines. Here are the eight key rules you must follow:

  1. Size Limit: Only e-scooters within 120 × 70 × 120 cm are permitted.
  2. Bus Type Restriction: E-scooters are not allowed on intercity coach buses.
  3. Quantity Limit: A maximum of two e-scooters per passenger is allowed.
  4. Condition: Scooters must be clean, dry, and neatly folded before boarding.
  5. Boarding/Exiting: Use wide doors to load and unload your scooter.
  6. Storage: Place scooters in designated storage areas only, not in aisles or doorways.
  7. Securement: Secure your scooter with straps at approved anchor points.
  8. Immobilization: Ensure the scooter is fully immobilized and does not move during the journey.

Why These Rules Matter

E-scooters offer an eco-friendly, flexible travel option, but their integration with mass transit requires clear rules to prevent hazards and disruptions. These regulations are part of Dubai's broader effort to manage its growing micromobility landscape safely.

In recent years, authorities have enforced stricter e-scooter rules, including licensing requirements and safety campaigns, to protect riders and pedestrians. Adhering to public transport guidelines helps avoid fines, refusal of service, and contributes to a safer commuting environment for everyone.

Safety and Sustainability Go Hand-in-Hand

By defining how e-scooters interact with buses and the Metro, the RTA aims to harmonize micromobility with existing infrastructure. This supports Dubai's vision for a smart, connected, and sustainable transport network that reduces car dependency, eases congestion, and lowers emissions.

For riders, understanding and following these rules ensures a hassle-free commute and promotes a culture of responsible and respectful shared travel. As Dubai continues to evolve as a micromobility-friendly city, these clear guidelines are crucial for both commuters and the overall efficiency of the public transport system.
