Etisalat Returns: UAE Telecom Giant Drops the e& Name as It Marks 50 Years
The UAE's first telecom operator has told the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange it will move forward under its original Etisalat name, four years after adopting e&. The announcement coincides with the company's 50th anniversary and comes with free data and device offers for customers.
One of the UAE's best-known corporate names is going back to where it started. Etisalat, which changed its group identity to e& in 2022, said on Tuesday that it will carry its original name into the next chapter, timing the move to its 50th anniversary.
The announcement
The decision was made public through a filing with the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, where the company's shares trade. In it, the company described Etisalat as the name it is taking forward, one that reflects its heritage, its strategy and its ambitions for the age of artificial intelligence. It also summed up the brand's purpose in a line that has since been widely repeated: "Etisalat means connection."
The company was founded in 1976 as Emirates Telecommunications Corporation, a joint venture established just five years after the formation of the UAE. Half a century later, it describes its story as one that began at home and then expanded into every market it has since entered.
From Etisalat to e& and back
The 2022 rebrand was a deliberate attempt to reposition a telecoms operator as a wider technology and investment group. The "e" stood for the company's roots in connectivity; the ampersand pointed to everything else it wanted to be, from digital services and fintech to cloud and enterprise technology. At the time, the group kept the Etisalat name for its telecoms business in the UAE, later presenting it as "etisalat by e&".
The reversal is therefore notable. One industry publication described it as a U-turn, pointing out that a brand adopted less than five years ago is now being shelved. The company's own framing is different. It presents the return as a continuation of its identity rather than a retreat, and says the Etisalat name carries both its legacy and its direction.
What actually changes
A new logo and identity accompany the announcement, though reports note the design remains familiar. The transition also looks gradual. Parts of the group's own website still showed the e& brand alongside operating units such as e& International and e& Capital shortly after the filing. The announcement as reported so far does not set out a detailed timetable for signage, apps or subsidiary names.
For most customers in the UAE, the practical change may feel small, since the consumer telecoms brand never fully disappeared. For investors and partners, the message is that the group wants a single, instantly recognisable name as it pushes deeper into AI-related services.
Anniversary offers for customers
The company is using the milestone to reward its subscribers. In messages sent to customers on Tuesday, Etisalat offered 1GB of free data for every year a customer has been with the company, valid until 13 October. More than ten anniversary packages are available, including 50GB for Dh200, discounts of up to 90 per cent on selected devices and five times the usual data for postpaid users.
Why the name matters in the UAE market
Brand identity carries unusual weight in the UAE telecoms market, where the two national operators have competed for customers for years and where consumers often use the old names in everyday speech regardless of corporate branding. A return to Etisalat aligns the company's formal identity with the name many residents never stopped using.
It also gives the group a cleaner story to tell as it marks its anniversary: a half-century operator that has grown from a domestic telephone service into a business with operations across the Middle East, Asia and Africa, and which now wants to be known first for connection and then for what it builds on top of it.
What to watch next
Two questions will shape how the change is judged. The first is how quickly the e& name disappears from the group's subsidiaries, digital products and investor materials. The second is whether the company pairs the rebrand with concrete announcements on AI services, which it has put at the centre of its pitch. Customers, for their part, can expect more anniversary promotions until the offers close on 13 October.
For now, the message from Abu Dhabi is simple: after four years as e&, the company is Etisalat again.
